Unit Organization

The way our Unit works

Patients with hematological disorders are treated at Montepríncipe HM Hospital, Puerta del Sur HM consulting offices and Sanchinarro HM Hospital.

By contrast, all patients with oncological disorders are treated at Montepríncipe HM Hospital, where the whole infrastructure is located (day hospital, hospitalization, procedure room, admissions, school, rehabilitation, music therapy, voluntary service).

The Unit is divided into three main areas, though they are interconnected in practice.

  • Consultations: new patients are attended, and patients who are not under treatment are monitored.

Pediatric hematology and pediatric oncology patients are seen at Montepríncipe HM Hospital consulting offices. Also, in November 2016, new pediatric hematology consulting offices were opened at the Puerta del Sur HM Hospital and at the Sanchinarro HM Hospital.

Second opinion consultations are provided. When making an appointment it is necessary to mention that it is a second opinion consultation, because they require more time. It is necessary to gain access to any existing information and supplementary tests. A report will be written after the consultation.

  • Day hospital: it is used for outpatient chemotherapy administration, supportive treatment (blood products transfusions, antibiotics), Port-A-Cath flushing, procedures that require anesthesia (bone marrow aspirations or biopsies, lumbar punctures). It works every day from 9:00 to 18:00. Treatments are also given on the weekends.

  • Hospital admission: located in the same Unit and exclusive for pediatric hematology and oncology patients. It has two isolated rooms with laminar flow where the patient can be constantly monitored.

  • Transplant Unit: autologous stem-cell transplantation is done.
