Bone Tumors

The Pediatric and Adolescent Bone Tumor Unit of the Pediatric Oncology Unit (UOP) at HM CIOCC provides care for children diagnosed with benign and malignant bone tumors, as well as sarcomas and soft tissue tumors of the musculoskeletal system, using the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic methods.

The most frequent malignant bone tumors in this age group are osteosarcoma (4.8 per 106) and Ewing sarcoma (3 per 106).

Soft tissue sarcomas account for approximately 7% of pediatric tumors. More than 30 different subtypes have been described, each with distinct biological behavior requiring precise molecular characterization.

The management of these conditions requires a high level of specialization in both diagnosis and treatment, aimed not only at achieving survival but also at preserving the affected limb and maintaining functional outcomes.

The multidisciplinary team dedicated to this area includes:

  • Orthopedic Surgery and Reconstructive Surgery: Dr. Eduardo Ortiz
  • Pediatric Surgery: Dr. Leopoldo Martínez
  • Pediatric Radiology: Dr. Ángel Lancharro
  • Anesthesiology: Dr. Andrés López-García
  • Physical Therapy: Juan Abóitiz
