The Child and the Family
The goal is to integrate the illness into the normal life of the child and their family. It is important that the child can continue attending school and that parents can remain with their child when needed while also being able to return to work whenever possible.
In addition to medical care, the Unit provides a structured patient and family support program designed to promote family stability, emotional well-being, educational continuity, and social integration throughout the course of the illness.
At the hospital, families can:
- Stay with their children and, for this purpose, apply for the Benefit for the Care of Children with Cancer or Other Serious Illness
- Continue their personal development through the Parents’ School of the Unit: Integrated within the Humanities area of the Montepríncipe Hospital School, the UHOP Parents’ School offers weekly activities in which parents are invited to participate together with their children. The objective of these joint sessions aligns with the humanistic values that guide the Unit, bringing culture into the daily lives of parents and students. Each Wednesday, an activity is proposed around one of the three main pillars of the School: film forum, visual arts (in collaboration with Bettina Ingham), and a literary workshop. The content of these sessions, planned in advance, integrates naturally into the daily academic activity of the Montepríncipe School.
