Palliative Care

Palliative Care

The palliative care model in the Unit is based on early integration from the time of diagnosis in children and adolescents whose survival is compromised from the outset, as well as in those who experience relapse and may not respond to second-line or subsequent treatments.

Care is directed not only toward the child but also toward the family, supporting their physical, intellectual, social, and spiritual well-being throughout the final stage of life.

Palliative care is provided by the same team that has cared for the child since diagnosis, incorporating additional specialists as required in each situation, particularly Pain Medicine (Dr. J. Pérez Cajaraville).

Care may be delivered at home or in the hospital, according to the child’s wishes and the parents’ decision. There is no financial cost to the family for palliative care services.

When provided at home, care involves the progressive incorporation of professionals according to the child’s clinical condition, beginning with medical and nursing visits and increasing nursing presence as required.

The psychosocial team continues at home with the same level of support provided in the hospital setting.
